Recent Sad News
Like so many people across the country, I have followed the recent news surrounding former Hull funeral director Robert Bush with great sadness. I was horrified, hearing the news back in April 2025.
The court has now handed down a 20-year prison sentence for offences that have had a devastating impact on the bereaved families, loved ones and friends.
As an Independent Celebrant working in Lincolnshire, my thoughts are not with the individual in the news headlines.
My Own Thoughts
My thoughts are with the families whose trust was broken, the police officers and investigators who have had the incredibly difficult task of uncovering the truth, and everyone who has supported those affected throughout this long and painful process.
When a family places the care of a loved one into the hands of a funeral director, they do so at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. They should never have to question whether that trust has been honored.
When I am supporting my clients, I have had the privilege of working with many exceptional funeral directors. These are the people who care deeply about the families they serve.
Compassion & Recognition For The Vast Majority
They work with kindness, dignity and professionalism, often going far beyond what anyone ever sees. Their compassion deserves to be recognised, because this case does not represent the values of the vast majority of people working within the profession.
If there is one positive that can come from such heartbreaking circumstances, I hope it is renewed confidence in the future through appropriate regulation.
Accountability
When clear standards are put in place, they will reassure families that accountability exists and that every person entrusted with the care of the deceased is working to the highest possible standard.
Today my thoughts remain with everyone affected. May they continue to find strength, support and peace.
As an Independent Celebrant, I will continue to work alongside funeral professionals who share the values of compassion, dignity and respect, ensuring that every family I support receives the care they deserve.
