Tattoos: A New Perspective on Grief and Remembrance by Kerry Stamp

Last week, I watched a series on BBC television, about tattoos.  I found myself seeing them in a completely different light!

A Lasting Tribute:

The program I found most interesting shared the stories of several women, all mothers who had experienced the unimaginable loss of their children to suicide.  Each woman decided to commemorate their loss with a tattoo—a lasting tribute etched into their skin.  As I listened to their stories, I realised how powerful and healing this act could be.

Tattoos: Through Time

Historically, tattoos have carried deep significance across many cultures.  Polynesian and Japanese traditions, use tattoos as a way to honour lineage and tell stories.  Sailors in the 1700s, wore tattoos to mark significant experiences, serve as talismans, or remember travels.

The Swallow:

Symbols like swallows denoted every 5,000 nautical miles sailed, while anchors symbolised stability amidst the uncertainty of life at sea.

Modern Tattoos: A Path to Healing

In today’s society, tattoos have evolved, they’ve become a means of processing grief and keeping memories alive.  For those mourning the loss of a loved one, the act of designing and receiving a tattoo can be deeply reflective.

Common designs:

  • Significant Dates: Birthdays, anniversaries, or dates of passing.
  • Personal Symbols: A loved one’s signature or their favourite flower.
  • Abstract Designs: Feathers, infinity signs, or other symbols that capture the person’s love and memory.

Emotional Pain:

Some people connect the physical pain of getting a tattoo with the emotional pain of their loss.  Once it’s complete, the tattoo serves as a permanent reminder of enduring love and connection, a way to carry that person with them, always.

A Newfound Understanding:

For me, last week’s short series was eye-opening!  Tattoos, I now see can be a deeply personal and meaningful expression of love and loss.  While tattoos may not be for everyone, I have come to appreciate the comfort they can bring to those who have lost someone.

Memories And Grief:

Whether it’s a way to process grief, reflect on shared memories, or honour someone’s life, tattoos tell stories that live on long after we’re gone.  They’re an act of remembrance, of reflection, and of healing.

If you’ve ever considered a memorial tattoo, or even if you haven’t, I hope this perspective helps you see them in a different light.

What Would You Do?

Would you have a tattoo to show your grief, love and connection?

I would love to know what symbol or shape would you go for and why?
