The Morning After a Valentine’s Day Proposal!
It’s the day after Valentines and congratulations to you both!
The candles have burned low. The flowers are beginning to soften.
Your phone is full of messages that say, “I knew it!” and “Show me the ring!” And there it is!
That beautiful, sparkling reminder on your hand that something has changed. You’re engaged! Congratulations!!
Valentine’s Day in the UK has always carried romance with it, but when a proposal happens on 14 February, it feels almost cinematic. There was planning behind it. Intention. Nerves and Hope. You said Yes!!
But what I’ve noticed, as a wedding celebrant in Lincolnshire, is that the real journey begins the next day.
It begins when the excitement settles into something deeper. You carry that inner smile! You both sit together over coffee and say, “So… what happens now?”
For some couples, the instinct is to open laptops immediately. To rush in and start planning.
Before that, I would encourage you to do something else and that’s take a breath, pause.
Enjoy where you are and enjoy being engaged. It’s a great feeling so let it settle for a short while!
Go for a walk together. Talk about how it felt when the question was asked. Talk about what marriage actually means to you both. Not the wedding day, the marriage, living together as a couple and/or family and all the changes that are there to look forward to.
What do you want your life to feel like in ten years’ time? What kind of partnership are you building? Think about the intention of starting your life together excited and aware of what’s ahead.
Over the years, I have met many couples who thought they were planning a wedding, when really, as a couple you are shaping a promise, a life, a future.
And this is often the moment when my couples discover something they didn’t fully realise before, that you have choices.
My couples discover that a ceremony doesn’t have to be rushed or impersonal. That it can take place outdoors in the Lincolnshire countryside, in a barn filled with laughter, in a family garden, or somewhere that means something deeply personal.
My couples discover that their story can be told properly.
Your children can be included and your guests can feel part of something meaningful. Also, your vows can sound like both of you saying what is important to you both about being together.
This is usually when our paths cross. Not because they’re “booking a supplier”. But because they want to talk and plan and I love these conversations.
Couples want to understand what a celebrant wedding ceremony actually feels like. They want to explore what’s possible. They want reassurance that the heart of their day won’t be lost in logistics.
When I spend time with my clients, it’s never about pressure. We talk about possibility.
We sit, often with that proposal sparkle still fresh, and we talk about their first date. Their ordinary Tuesday nights. The challenges they’ve already overcome. The reasons they chose each other.
Because that is what a wedding ceremony is. It’s a declaration, witnessed by the people who matter most to you both.
If you’ve just got engaged this Valentine’s Day, my gentle advice is this:
Protect the feeling. Enjoy your love, take time to feel happy together! Hold onto that special feeling and live your love!
Wedding planning will come. Venues will fill. Diaries will book up. Pinterest boards will grow.
But this season, this newly engaged, slightly dazed, deeply in-love season, is precious.
And when you’re ready, have a conversation with someone who understands that your ceremony is more than just a slot in the day.
It is the moment your promises are spoken out loud. It sets the tone for everything that follows.
As the Lincoln celebrant, I believe your wedding ceremony should feel warm, loving, personal and completely reflective of you.
If you found yourself saying “yes” on 14 February 2026, and you’re now wondering what comes next… perhaps it starts with a conversation and please get in touch.
