The Easter Egg Challenge by Kerry Stamp

Poem The Easter Egg Challenge

You wake on Easter morning,
With the best of good intent,
“Today I’ll be sensible with chocolate…”
That’s the message your brain sent.

You wander down in slippers,
Still cosy, half awake,
But there they sit, those Easter eggs
More than any heart could take.

You tell yourself, “Just one small bit,”
A tiny piece, that’s all…
But wrappers come off far too fast,
And one egg starts it all.

By eleven with a coffee,
You fancy just a small treat,
A “little square” turns into more
Because, well… it’s Easter week.

Then comes the firm decision,
“No chocolate till after lunch,”
You say it with conviction,
And give yourself a cheer!

You sit to eat with family,
A table full of cheer,
But someone’s brought more Easter eggs,
Of course, the rules are clear!

Dessert arrives… or doesn’t,
Because it’s very hard to choose,
That “just a bite” becomes a fix
that means you break the rules!

By half past three it’s certain,
The pattern’s firmly set,
You’ve unwrapped another egg,
It’s the biggest one you’ve met!

A walk is then suggested,
“To balance things,” you say,
You stroll off full of good intent,
And burn just a few calories away.

Back home, the kettle’s calling,
A cuppa feels just right,
And somehow… two more eggs are gone,
Without putting up a fight.

By evening, full of chocolate,
You sigh and softly say,
“I’ve had enough to sink a ship
I’ll be good from tomorrow, okay?”

But Easter Monday greets you,
With a quiet, knowing grin,
Because you’ve just remembered Granny’s eggs…

And you know you’ll never win!
