All About Commitment Ceremonies:
As a celebrant, I am fortunate to help couples celebrate their love in many different ways. One of the most meaningful types of ceremonies I create is a Commitment Ceremony. A beautiful and heartfelt way for couples to affirm their bond without the legalities of marriage.
With a very special ceremony coming up this December (2025), it feels like the perfect moment to share what a Commitment Ceremony is, who it is for, and why it holds such a treasured place in the world of modern relationships.
What Is a Commitment Ceremony
A Commitment Ceremony is a personalised celebration of a couple’s relationship. It includes many of the elements of a traditional wedding such as vows, readings, symbolic gestures, rings, and the presence of loved ones, but without any legal documents. It is a ceremony about love, intention, and choosing each other rather than legal status.
Who Are They For
Commitment Ceremonies are wonderfully inclusive and flexible, making them ideal for couples who are unable to legally marry yet, who are waiting for a divorce to be finalised, who prefer not to legally marry at all, or who simply want a meaningful celebration that honors their relationship.
My upcoming clients are a perfect example. One partner is waiting for a divorce to come through, and the couple also has a direct family member who is seriously ill. They did not want to wait any longer to celebrate their love and to gather their families for a meaningful occasion. Their ceremony will be both a deeply personal moment for them and a precious family memory.
Why Commitment Ceremonies Are So Special
A Commitment Ceremony offers something wonderfully unique, the freedom to design a celebration that feels completely personal. There are no rules, only what feels right for the couple. My couple met three years ago and have supported each other through some extremely challenging times. They have a blended family and a couple of the children have very serious health problems. Their celebration will recognise their love, their resilience, their growth, and the trust they have built together.
They have chosen to write letters of commitment to each other, to exchange commitment rings, and to celebrate with a small family gathering at a warm and welcoming local venue. With a buffet and a disco, they will be able to create joyful memories with those closest to them. Their families play an important role in their future, making this ceremony especially meaningful.
What Happens in a Commitment Ceremony
Each ceremony is created uniquely, but it often includes:
listening to the couple’s story
A poem or reading
Vows or personal promises
A symbolic act such as rings or letters
For this ceremony, I am at the lovely beginning stage of writing their script and selecting a poem that reflects their journey. They will be able to keep their written ceremony and readings as a keepsake, a reminder of a day that marks a significant chapter in their lives.
When Can You Have a Commitment Ceremony
The beauty of a Commitment Ceremony is that you can have one at any time. There are no legal restrictions, couples can choose a meaningful date, select a location that holds personal significance, and include elements that matter to them. A Commitment Ceremony can take place whenever it feels right.
Why I Love Creating These Ceremonies
Commitment Ceremonies celebrate the heart of a relationship, the promise to walk through life together with love and intention. Every couple brings their own story, their own reasons, and their own hopes. My role is to honour that story with warmth, authenticity, and care, and to create a ceremony that feels truly theirs.
