Just last week, I received a telephone call from a lady who was feeling quite distressed.
She had done all the things couples do when planning a wedding. She had booked her venue, chosen her bridesmaids, ordered her cake and started to imagine the day itself. Everything felt in place.
The difficulty was not the love or the commitment. It was the paperwork.
Her divorce was taking longer than expected, and it looked unlikely that it would be finalised in time for the wedding date. Something completely outside her control was suddenly threatening a day she had poured her heart into.
This is where stress can quickly take over.
Rather than focusing on what might not be able to happen legally, we gently talked through another option. A commitment ceremony.
A commitment ceremony is just as beautiful and meaningful as a wedding ceremony. The only real difference is the language that is used. There are no legal declarations, but the heart of the day remains exactly the same.
It meant she could still have her venue, she could still wear her dress, she could still have her bridesmaids, her cake and her guests.
Most importantly, she could still stand in front of the people she loves and make a clear, heartfelt commitment to her partner.
At the end of the ceremony, she would also receive a certificate to mark that their commitment had been witnessed and recognised by their family and friends. A moment that matters deeply, regardless of legal timing.
This kind of situation is happening more and more often. Legal timescales do not always align with real life plans, and that can feel overwhelming for couples who simply want to celebrate their love.
As a celebrant, my role is to support people with care, flexibility and understanding. Sometimes that means helping couples pivot, gently and calmly, so their day can still be joyful rather than stressful.
There is more than one way to celebrate love.
